The Cottage on Mussel Cove

When we say – get away from it all – we mean it! But we don’t ask you to give up any of the creature comforts – otherwise it wouldn’t be a vacation. Here’s what you will find here….. a 52 acre peninsula of woods and fields with too much private waterfront to quantify. At the point of the property is a little bridge that leads to your own private six acre island.

All of this is tucked inside the protected waters of Chedabucto Bay – the largest bay on the Atlantic Coast and one of the most picturesque and pristine bodies of water in Nova Scotia. Freshwater habitats are more productive than elsewhere in the region and water temperatures are warmer in the summer than on more exposed coasts of the province. The Bay’s 600 kilometres of shoreline provide an endless array of natural and historical adventures. Chedabucto Bay’s great expanse enables travellers to experience one of Atlantic Canada’s natural wonders. There are secluded coves and beaches, oceanfront hiking and cycling trails including the first leg of the Trans Canada Trail in Nova Scotia.

The Cottage on Mussel Cove was recently renovated with deliberate intent to retain its rustic woodsy ambience.

The kitchen is equipped with new appliances and a counter where you can lean, mix drinks and cheer on the cook. It’s open onto the living/dining area with fireplace and surrounded by a summery screened in porch. Both bedrooms have comfortable new queen size beds and there’s a great sleeping loft that kids love.

There’s no fussiness here- just lots of comfort and a great attitude.

This is a fisherman’s’ paradise where you can walk out in the morning and cast your fly rod into the waters for mackerel, sea trout and striped bass.

If you forgot your rod then take a bucket to the shore and harvest mussels the size of your first for your evening meal. Bring your snorkel and fins and we’ll show you how to dive for scallops. If you’re here during lobster season (May and June) you can flag down the lobster fishermen who will let you choose from the daily catch.

For landlubbers we have acres of hiking trails throughout the property and lots more official trails beyond. Bring your binoculars to spot bald eagles, osprey and blue heron. The deer graze nearby.

Explore the coastline by canoe and make a day of it by picnicking in one of the many private coves.

When you decide you’ve had enough solitude you can walk or paddle to town. Our property backs on to the beautiful Osprey Shores Golf Resort.

It has remarkable ocean views from every fairway and is defined by a spectacular peninsula at the head of the Atlantic Coast’s largest bay. Beautiful Nova Scotia pine, balsam fir and spruce trees, and gentle off shore breezes create an ideal playing environment throughout the golfing season. The waterfront of Guysborough town was recently revitalized and today is the nicest little waterfront village you can imagine. The Rare Bird Brewery and Pub awaits you with great food and an old fashioned maritime ambience.

In the same complex you’ll find a marina with a ship chandlery. Whale spotting is not a rare occurrence.

If you really want to dress up for an evening you can have dinner at the Des Barres Manor, an exquisite luxury hotel just one block up from the waterfront.

The Mulgrave Road Theatre is also in the heart of town and attracts some of the best talent who come because they love this place.

The Stan Rogers Folk Festival is renown across Canada as a premier folk festival. It happens every year for three days in early July in the nearby town of Canso.

You can take many other day trips to spectacular sand beaches at Tor Bay Provincial Beach Park one of the most dramatic beaches along Nova Scotia’s Atlantic Coast with three sweeping sandy beaches, fragile sand dunes and rugged offshore rock formations.

Situated near the picturesque community of Little Dover, the Black Duck Cove Park & Beach has an extensive 3.5km/2.17mi boardwalk hike highlighted by a sandy beach around it’s perimeter.

This whole area is the least populated of one of the least populated provinces of Canada. Traffic jams and line ups are as foreign here as palm trees and camels. You will only find friendly inhabitants, proud of their Acadian traditions that epitomize Nova Scotia and its rich history of seafaring, fishing and farming. Your vacation at The Cottage on Mussel Cove will be full of activity, adventure and awe of the natural beauty that surrounds you. It’s truly a perfect getaway! If you want to know how perfect it is suffice it to say that the owners commute here all the way from Los Angeles.
