Artist's Beach House

Situated on the Antigonish Harbour just ten minutes from a lovely university town, this quiet retreat feels like it’s worlds away. The house comfortably sleeps ten. It's surrounded by water – on 6 acres of land. The beach goes on forever and is nicely secluded – swimming is excellent. So is canoeing and kayaking. The grounds are truly spectacular with gardens everywhere.

Indoors you’ll be greeted with warm cherry wood throughout, original art, oriental rugs and sumptuous furnishings. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, colourful and artistic. And every window looks onto the ocean.

The contemporary cherry wood kitchen has everything you need including dishwasher and lovely china, dishes, glassware and handmade ceramics. It’s well equipped with spices, condiments etc. There are plenty of fresh herbs for you to enjoy in the raised bed garden – tarragon, cilantro, chives, oregano, and mint.

Dining RoomThe dining area is part of the open concept plan combined with the comfortable main living area. A heavy pine table seats 6 – 8 people. You’ll have everything you need to set a lovely table.

A door from the dining area leads to a covered porch where you will find a deluxe barbecue and a comfortable cooking area. It’s designed for outdoor dining with wooden chairs and round table. Steps lead down to the deck that flows around directly to the waterfront and another more open dining area with patio furniture including an umberella. This is a perfect place to watch the sunset as you conclude your evening meal with a glass of wine.

Enjoy the local seafood for your meals. Lobster season closes at the end of June but there is plenty of fresh lobster available everywhere at good prices.

The Great Room

Great Room

Steps from the open living area take you down to the great room, a spectacular room with 14’ vaulted ceilings and French doors that lead out to the deck. You’ll find more original art, a fireplace and lots of wonderful books to browse.

There are 5 bedrooms, two upstairs and three below. Three have queen beds, one has a double and one has two twin beds. The beds are very comfortable with good sheets and cozy duvets. There is also a pull out sofa in the family room if needed. Extra linens are available.

Bedroom Bedroom Bedroom Bedroom

There are two full bathrooms – one on each level. Towels on the rods are ready for you but if you need more they can be found in the closet in the upstairs bathroom.

In fact there are three bathrooms. The third one is just a

bit unusual. Just beyond the raised bed garden on the

waterfront you will see a small structure that is actually

our composting outhouse. The view is beautiful and it’s

a unique and peaceful experience! Plus you’re helping

the environment!

Laundry facilities are in the lower level – an automatic washer and drier- and we have installed a clothesline outside. The scent of clothes dried in the sea air is exquisite.

The Great Outdoors

Well the outhouse is a good start. But there’s lots more to enjoy. Canoeing on the harbour is exquisite. Take a picnic and visit the many sandy beaches or go bird watching for eagles and osprey nests. If you prefer to kayak, we have two of those as well.

Dunn’s Beach just across the harbour – about 20 minutes by canoe.

OutdoorsWe have a beautiful nature trail carved out of our woods. These woods are well maintained to ensure a good habitat for wildlife. Watch for the trees that are favoured by the pileated woodpeckers. You can also walk out to the point of the beach through the trail in the other section of forest. The walk will take about 10 – 20 minutes.

For just laying about, there are plenty of chairs with cushions on deck that surrounds the house. Part of it is covered so you can dine in a more sheltered spot. Rain just enhances that experience!

If you’d like to have a bonfire on the beach there’s plenty of wood in the woodshed beyond the main shed.

Swimming here is the best in Nova Scotia because we have the warmest waters in the province. Our shoreline is a little rocky so it’s best to have shoes with soft bottoms – i.e. windsurfer shoes. There’ll be some under the table on the porch in case you forget – but they may not be your size so best to bring some. There are plenty of fluffy beach towels for you to use.

And if you enjoy seeing the birds, there’s a birdfeeder is in the big tree directly in view of the kitchen window. Listen for pileated woodpeckers and search the sky for great blue heron and American eagles. Cormorants, kingfishers and osprey are regularly scanning the waters.

Pet Friendly

We welcome well mannered and clean pets

The Great Indoors

For art lovers there’s plenty of original work on the walls to entertain your eyes. Handmade pottery comes from a variety of artisans, most of them Nova Scotian artists who you can read about in the Studio Rally book on the coffee table.

If you would like to see more of our local art you can visit the Lyghtesome Gallery beside the court house and the Down to Earth Gallery both on Main St. or visit some of the studios in the area. This region is a haven for artists, writers, crafts designers and such.

The Neighbourhood

Terra Tory is a private road and a wonderful place to walk to get your heart rate up. We’re all good friends along here – everyone waves and says hello.

There are fire extinguishers on both floors – one beside the woodstove in the family room and one on the large bureau outside the 2 lower level bedrooms. The house is equipped with smoke detectors that work very well. You’ll find out if you burn your toast.

When boating, please ensure you wear your life jackets. They are in the shed along with the canoe paddles.

You may call from here to anywhere in North America at any time for free. Other calls should be placed on your phone card.

If you brought your laptop then you can access the Internet because we now have wireless access.

TV and DVD Player

There are lots of movies to choose from or you can rent them from town.

Your experience at the Artist’s Beach House

will be remembered for a lifetime!
